The Early Years

Al Pacino was born on April 25th, 1940 in East Harlem, Manhattan. His full name is Alfredo James Pacino.

Al’s parents divorced when he was only 2 years old. Following this, he and his mother moved in with his grandparents in the Bronx.

His grandparents were Italian immigrants who were from Corleone, Sicily. Al’s father was also born in Sicily, and moved to California during Al’s childhood.

Al Pacino was not a huge fan of school. He went to Herman Ridder Junior High school but ended up dropping out of most classes except for English.

Later, he auditioned for and gained entry to the High School of Performing Arts. His mother was extremely unhappy with the decision. After which he moved out.

During this time he supported himself with a series of different jobs which included being a busboy, messenger and a janitor.

It was at this time where he would act wherever he could. He would also often find himself unemployed and homeless.

He sometimes performed in basement plays in New York’s theatre underground. Al also auditioned for lots of acting companies but was mostly rejected.

Finally, he was accepted into HB Studio where his teacher Charlie Laughton took him under his wing and became his long-term mentor and best friend.

His 4 years at HB Studio finally led to him being accepted into the Actors Studio. This is an organization of the country’s top professional actors, playwrights, and theatre directors.

Al worked a season at a playhouse in Boston in 1967 performing a play called Awake and Sing. At this point, he earned a career-high $125 a week.

In 1968 he performed in Israel Horovitv’s play The Indian Wants the Bronx which ran for 177 performances.

During his time performing this play, entertainment manager Martin Bergman was extremely impressed by Al Pacino’s performance that he signed him on the spot, their relationship lasting many years.

Bergman was the one who persuaded Al to accept roles in both The Godfather and Dog Day Afternoon. Both of which are two of his leading films.

In 1969, Pacino made his film debut with Me, Natalie. Shortly after he starred in another film, The Panic in Needle Park.

It’s that film that got the attention of Francis Ford Coppola who ultimately cast him in the role of Michael Corleone in The Godfather which produced his first-ever Oscar nomination.

Following the success of The Godfather, Pacino starred in classics such as Serpico, Dog Day Afternoon and The Godfather Part 2.

The 80’s were less fruitful for Pacino. However, in 1983 he starred as Tony Montana in Scarface.

Despite being a flop with the critics, the film was a box office success and has become one of his most iconic roles.

At the time of writing Al Pacino has been nominated for 8 Oscars, with one win.

Salary Highlights

In The Godfather, Al earned $35,000. In today’s money that is about $215,000, adjusting for inflation.

The second Godfather saw his earnings jump, he got $500,000, which after adjusting for inflation is around $2.6M.

Probably unsurprisingly, Francis Ford Coppola refused and threatened to make the opening scene the funeral of Michael Corleone. They eventually compromised on a flat $5M.

In 1992, he earned $1.5M for Glengarry Glen Ross and $6M for Carlito’s Way. Throughout the 1990’s Al was consistently earning $10M+ per film appearance.

For example, the 2002 flop S1m0ne still earned him $11M.

Currently, Al has an ongoing deal with HBO which guarantees him a payday of $10M for any feature film he stars in for the network. So far there have been 3 films through this deal, Paterno, Phil Spector and You Don’t Know Jack.

In 2019, Al Pacino starred alongside Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci in Martin Scorsese’s Neflix drama The Irishman. Each earned a reported $20M which accounted for almost half the film’s total budget.

At the time of writing it is a career high payday (before royalties).
