The Early Years
Barbara Corcoran was born on March 10, 1949, in Edgewater, New Jersey. She was 1 of 10 children brought up in an Irish-Catholic home.
Barbara studied at St. Cecilia High School before dropping out and transferring over to Leonia High School.
1n 1971, Barbara got a degree in education from St. Thomas Aquinas College and spent a year teaching school.
Before beginning her real estate career, Barbara had 22 different jobs.
At 23, Barbara started working as a receptionist at the Giffuni Brothers real estate company.
She borrowed £1000 from her then-boyfriend, Ray Simone so she could start her own business. With the money she co-founded Corcoran-Simone in 1973.
After seven years the pair split up after Ray left Barbara for her secretary, rubbing further salt into the wounds by saying she wouldn’t succeed without him. Something she has been proving him wrong ever since.
The business later became The Corcoran Group and the astonishing success of the business meant she sold it for $66M in 2001.
Corcoran started publishing the real estate newsletter The Corcoran Report in the mid-1970s and has written multiple books, some include, If You Don’t Have Big Breasts, Put Ribbons On Your Pigtails: And Other Lessons I Learned From My Mom and Shark Tales: How I Turned $1,000 into a Billion Dollar Business.
She started her TV career in 2009 when she first starred on Shark Tank, alongside Kevin O’Leary, Daymond John, Kevin Harrington and Robert Herjavec.
She has been an investor for the show for nine seasons now and has completed 52 deals on the show. Her average investment size is $103k.
In 2017, Corcoran competed in season 25 of Dancing With The Stars but was the first couple to be eliminated.
In 2018, Barbara team up with iHeartRadio to start a weekly podcast, Business Unusual With Barbara Corcoran. It has since become a huge success and is one of the most downloaded business podcasts.
She has also appeared as herself on many TV shows, most notably Drop Dead Diva and Grace and Frankie.
In 2001 Barbara bought a 2,700 square foot, Park Avenue apartment for $3.5M.
