Who is Celine Dion?
Celine Dion is a Canadian singer and actress who has a net worth of $800M.
She is known for her extremely powerful and technically skilled voice.
She has sold over 220 million albums worldwide and is still extremely popular.
It is estimated that she earns between $40-$50M each year.
The Early Years
Dion was born in Charlemagne, Quebec, 24 kilometres (15 mi) northeast of Montreal, the youngest of 14 children of Thérèse (1927–2020), a homemaker, and Adhémar Dion (1923–2003), a butcher, both of French-Canadian descent.
She was raised a Roman Catholic in a poor but, by her own account, happy home in Charlemagne.
Music had always been a major part of the Dion family, and she was named after the song “Céline”, which French singer Hugues Aufray had recorded two years before her birth.
On 13 August 1973, at the age of five, the young Céline made her first public appearance at her brother Michel’s wedding, where she performed Christine Charbonneau’s song “Du fil, des aiguilles et du cotton”.
She continued to perform with her siblings in her parents’ small piano bar called Le Vieux Baril, “The Old Barrel”.
At age 12, she collaborated with her mother and her brother Jacques to write and compose her first song, “Ce n’était qu’un rêve”, whose title translates as “It Was Only a Dream” or “Nothing But A Dream”.
Her brother Michel sent the recording to music manager René Angélil, whose name he discovered on the back of a Ginette Reno album. Angélil was moved to tears by Dion’s voice and decided to make her a star.
In 1981, he mortgaged his home to fund her first record, La voix du bon Dieu, which later became a local No. 1 hit and made her an instant star in Quebec.
Her popularity spread to other parts of the world when she competed in the 1982 Yamaha World Popular Song Festival in Tokyo, Japan, and won the musician’s award for “Top Performer” as well as the gold medal for “Best Song” with “Tellement j’ai d’amour pour toi”.
At age eighteen, after seeing a Michael Jackson performance, Dion told Angélil that she wanted to be a star like Jackson.
Though confident in her talent, Angélil realized that her image needed to be changed for her to be marketed worldwide.
She receded from the spotlight for a number of months, during which she underwent dental surgery to improve her appearance, and was sent to the École Berlitz in 1989 to polish her English.
Celine Dion’s real international breakthrough came in 1992 with Disney’s animated film “Beauty and the Beast”, and her duet with Peabo Bryson on the title track of the film.
The song won a Grammy and an Academy Award, and made it to No. 9 on the Billboard Hot 100.
The song was on her next album, “Celine Dion”, and became her first gold record in the U.S, selling over 12 million copies across the world. With this, she launched her first solo, headlining tour.
In 1996, Dion released her fourth English speaking album, “Falling Into You,” which included No. 1 hit “Because You Loved Me”, from the soundtrack to 1996 film “Up Close and Personal.”
The album secured Grammy Awards for Album of the Year and Best Pop Album. Celine performed “The Power of the Dream” at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta GA, thrusting her further into international stardom.
By the mid-1990s, Dion had established herself as one of the best-selling musical artists in the world.
Dion’s “Let’s Talk About Love” album (1997) reached major success featuring the movie “Titanic”‘s theme “My Heart Will Go On“, becoming Dion’s most famous song.
The film had a record number of Oscar noms, and “My Heart Will Go On” went on to win the 1997 Academy Award and Golden Globe for Best Original Song for Dion.
Dion won two Grammy awards for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance and the highly esteemed Record of the Year award for the track. “My Heart Will Go On” sold 50 million records worldwide, and quickly shot to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100.
Dion continues to be a successful and much sought-after entertainer, embarking on long residencies such as in Las Vegas at Caesars Palace in 2009.
In 2009, Forbes magazine said that Dion was the second-highest earning musician after Madonna. Pollstar announced in December 2009 that she was the best-selling solo touring act of the decade.
Throughout the early oughts, she returned to making French-speaking albums, producing four between 2003-2016.
During a Facebook Live event in April 2019, Dion announced her Courage World Tour which began in Quebec City in September 2019.
She also announced a new English album of the same name which was released November 2019.
Between 2000 and 2010 Celine Dion was the highest grossing entertainer in the world.
If you add up ticket sales, record sales, merchandise and every other source of income, Celine’s empire grossed over $720 million!
Of that amount, $500 million came from worldwide ticket sales and of that $500 million, $350 million came from her Las Vegas show alone.
In 2008, Celine and her husband Renee spent $7 million to acquire a lavish mansion on Jupiter Island in South Florida that sits on 415-feet of private ocean frontage.
She listed the 6-acre property for sale in August 2013 for $72.5 million.
Celine could not find a buyer even after lowering the price to $65 then $45 million. Finally, a buyer was found in April 2017 for $38.5 million.
In 2016 she sold a 20-acre private island outside of Quebec for $25 million. Her main homes today are a $10 million mansion in Paris and an 8,000 square-foot mansion in Las Vegas.
