Who is Gordon Ramsay?

Gordon Ramsay is a famous UK chef and reality TV star who has a net worth of $220M.

As a reality TV star, Gordon Ramsay is most well known for his fiery temper, frequent use of bad language, and strict set of rules. He often insults his contestants cooking abilities.

The Early Years

Gordon Ramsay was born in Johnstone, Renfrewshire, Scotland on November 8, 1966.

At the age of 5 he moved to England with his family and grew up in Stratford-upon-Avon.

Ramsay is the second of four children. His family was continually on the move when he was a youngster due to his father’s professional aspirations. His father was sometimes violent and also an alcoholic.

At the age of 16, Gordon left his family’s home and moved into his own apartment. As a teenager, Ramsay was a good footballer. However, his career was cut short due to injury.

At around the same time, Ramsay had discovered his love for cooking. By age 19, he enrolled in the Hotel Management program at North Oxfordshire Technical College.

Career

Ramsay began working at the Wroxton Hotel in the mid-1980s as a commis chef.

Following on from there he went on to run the kitchen and a 60-seat dining room at the Wickham Arms.

Later, he moved to London, where he worked in a number of restaurants before landing his most prestigious job to date, working for Marco Pierre White at Harvey’s.

He stayed at Harvey’s for nearly 3 years before becoming fed up with White’s rages, bullying, and violence.

Ramsay then decided to focus on French cuisine and went on to work for Albert Roux and Le Gavroche in Mayfair.

It was here he met Jean-Calude Breton, now his maitre d-hotel at Restaurant Gordon Ramsay.

After a year working at La Gavroche, Roux invited Ramsay to work with him as his number two at Hotel Diva, a ski resort in the French Alps.

After working at the ski resort, Ramsay moved to Paris to work with Guy Savoy and Joel Robuchon who are both Michelin-starred chefs. He continued to train in France for a further three years.

Ramsay then had a sabbatical year working as a private chef on a yacht. Upon his return to London, he was offered the position of head chef at three-Michelin-starred chef Pierre Koffman’s La Tante Claire in Chelsea.

Shortly after, his old boss Marco Pierre White offered him the head chef position at the Rossmore, as well as a 10% share in the business.

Ramsay accepted, renamed the restaurant Aubergine, and won his first Michelin star 14 months later.

By 1997, Aubergine had won its second Michelin star. In 1998, Ramsay left the partnership over disagreements about which direction the business should go in.

In the same year, Ramsay opened his own restaurant called Restaurant Gordon Ramsay, in Chelsea, London.

In 2001, the restaurant received its third Michelin star. In doing so, Ramsay became the first Scotsman to achieve the feat.

From here, his empire expanded rapidly. He open and closed a number of well-respected restaurants, launched his U.S based TV series ‘Hells Kitchen’, and became a common feature on the Food Network.

He now has restaurants all over the world, including Dubai, London, Tokyo, New York, Canada, and Ireland.

TV Career

Gordon Ramsay’s first appearance on TV was in two documentaries called Boiling Point and Beyond Boiling Point.

In 2001, he appeared on Faking It, helping a prospective chef learn the tools of the trade.

That particular episode won a BAFTA in 2001 for Best Factual TV Moment.

In 2004 he starred in two British TV series called Ramsay’s Kitchen Nightmares and Hell’s Kitchen.

By 2005, Fox network showcased Ramsay to American audiences with a US version of Hells Kitchen. Later, a US version of Kitchen Nightmares was also shown on Fox.

In 2010, Ramsay was a producer and judge on the US version of MasterChef.

He has also hosted the series Ramsay’s Best Restaurant, the first series to be produced by his own production company, One Potato Two Potato.

Also in 2010, Ramsay joined several other big-name chefs in the 2010 series, The Big Fish Fight, where he and other chefs spent time on a trawler boat to raise awareness about the unnecessary discarding of fish.
