Who Is Jimmy Fallon?

Jimmy Fallon is an American comedian who has a net worth of $60M.

He is most well known for his work on Saturday Night Live, the host of The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, and as the host of Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.

Fallon earns $16M per year for hosting The Tonight Show.

The Early Years

James Thomas Fallon was born on September 19, 1974, in the Bay Ridge neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York, the son of Gloria (née Feeley, 1949–2017) and James Fallon, Sr. (born 1948).

He is of Irish, German, and Norwegian descent. His paternal grandmother, Luise Schalla, was a German immigrant from Osterholz-Scharmbeck, and his maternal grandmother’s father, Hans Hovelsen, was a Norwegian immigrant from Fredrikstad.

Another set of great-great-grandparents were Thomas Fallon, an Irishman from County Galway, and Louisa Stickever, the daughter of an Irishman born in France and his Irish wife.

Like many teenagers, Fallon became obsessed with Saturday Night Live.

He and his sister acted out sketches from the show for their parents and friends. At Saugerties High School, he was a performer in most of the stage productions during his four years of high school. He graduated from Saugerties High School in 1992.

He then attended The College of Saint Rose in Albany, New York, where he was a computer science major before switching to communications in his senior year.

He was an average student. On weekends, he would perform stand-up comedy. Fallon would often board buses from his aunt’s house in Fort Hamilton to perform sets at Caroline’s Comedy Club in Times Square.

He did not graduate, leaving college a semester early to pursue a comedy career.

Career

In Los Angeles, Jimmy joined The Groundlings improv group and started polishing his standup act. He often did stand-up at the legendary Improv, for which he was paid $7.50 per set, which didn’t even cover the cost of parking at the Improv.

He remained fixated on joining Saturday Night Live. After two years of working with the Groundlings, he auditioned for the program in 1997, but was unsuccessful.

When he was cast in a pilot presentation for The WB, Fallon made sure to include a clause in his contract specifying that if he were to join SNL he would be released from his contract.

His manager sent videotapes to Marci Klein and Ayala Cohen, producers for SNL.

Fallon landed his second audition at the age of 23. At the “notoriously difficult audition,” he was told by several people that creator Lorne Michaels almost never laughed during auditions.

He feared being outshined by the comic before him, who came armed with an arsenal of props. But Fallon went onstage and did well, performing a “celebrity walk-a-thon” with impressions of Jerry Seinfeld, Chris Rock, Bill Cosby, and Adam Sandler, an SNL alumnus who had recently left the show. Michaels and others laughed.

Three weeks since the audition and despite his feeling that he had not gotten the position, he was asked to meet with Michaels at the Paramount lot in Los Angeles.

Michaels informed him that they wanted him for the show, and Fallon characterized the moment as being in “slow motion,” remarking to Michaels before he left, “I’m going to make you proud.”

Fallon debuted on Saturday Night Live as a featured player at the beginning of the show’s twenty-fourth season in September 1998.

He became a star by his fourth episode, when he performed Halloween-themed versions of songs by popular artists, as well as his Sandler impression.

Fallon became a celebrity, considered charming by his largely female fan-base, receiving numerous letters from fans, and becoming the subject of numerous fan-sites.

In 2002, Fallon hosted the MTV Video Music Awards. During his opening monologue, Fallon spoofed the music videos of Eminem, Avril Lavigne, The White Stripes, Enrique Iglesias, Dave Matthews Band, and Nelly.

After leaving SNL, Jimmy pursued an acting career with movies like Fever Pitch, Factory Girl, Ted 2, Jem and the Holograms, iCarly, 30 Rock, Family Guy, Taxi, and Whip It.

In 2009, he took over from Conan O’Brien as the host of the television show Late Night with Conan O’Brien, which was renamed Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.

In April 2013, NBC announced that Jimmy had been selected to take over The Tonight Show from Jay Leno immediately following the 2014 winter Olympics.

Fallon is the first host in the history of The Tonight Show (except original host Steve Allen) who became the show’s permanent host without previously having served as a “Guest Host.”

Before him, Jay Leno had guest-hosted for Johnny Carson, Carson had done it for Jack Parr and Parr had done this for Steve Allen.

Fallon won Primetime Emmy Awards for Late Night with Jimmy Fallon in 2010, Saturday Night Live in 2012 and 2014, and The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon in 2015.

Real Estate

Jimmy’s first real estate purchase was an $850,000 one-bedroom condo in New York City that he purchased in 2002. He bought the apartment at the urging of SNL producer Lorne Michaels.

Jimmy has later revealed he could not actually afford the purchase back in 2002, but he wisely followed Lorne’s advice. After he married Nancy Juvonen, they began buying up neighboring units.

For example in 2014 they paid $725,000 for a top-floor studio apartment.

The purchase in the nine-story, roughly 35-unit building was in addition to a purchase a few months earlier of a one-bedroom apartment next door to the studio for $1.35 million.

Over time they combined the units to create a six-bedroom, 5,000 square-foot apartment. Their total spend on five apartments was $5.8 million.

In March 2021, Jimmy and Nancy listed their complex for $15 million.
