Mel Gibson was born in Peekskill, New York on January 3, 1956. He moved to Australia with his family when he was still a boy at 12 years old.
Gibson is the sixth of eleven children. His father Hutton Gibson was a writer and his mother Anne Patricia passed away in 1990.
He moved to Australia when he was 12 due to various economic reasons. His grandmother is a native Australian.

In 1993, he made his directorial debut with The Man Without a Face. He later filmed Braveheart which won him an Oscar for Best Director.
Gibson’s most controversial film was to come in 2004 when he directed and funded The Passion of The Christ.
It became the highest grossing film with an R rating of all time, making more than $370M at the box office.
In 2016 he directed Hacksaw Ridge which received an incredible 14 award nominations including an Academy Award for Best Achievement in Directing and a Golden Globe for Best Director – Motion Picture.

Gibson bought a 400-acre ranch in Costa Rica in 2007 for $26M. Since then he has tried to sell it for $35M but hasn’t been successful in doing do.
In 2007 he sold a Tudor style estate in Connecticut for $40M. A good investment as he bought it for $9M in 1994.
Mel bought a 5.5-acre home in Malibu for $11.5M in 2008. He bought it from the then-married couple David Duchovny and Tea Leoni. He has tried to sell it since then, listing it in March 2019 for $14.5M.
