The Early Years
Richard Gere was born on August 31, 1949, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
His father, Homer George Gere, was an insurance agent for Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company and his mother, Doris Ann, was a housewife.
In 1967, Richard graduated from North Syracuse Central High School where he excelled at the trumpet, gymnastics and music.
Next, he went to the University of Massachusetts Amherst on a gymnastics scholarship, majoring in Philosophy.
However, he dropped out after two years and didn’t graduate.
Career
Richard started his acting career by appearing in plays both on and off Broadway.
His first role professionally was at the Seattle Repertory Theatre and at Cape Cod’s Provincetown Playhouse in 1969.
He starred in his first major theatre role in 1973, on the original West End in London stage version of Grease.
In 1979, Richard was one of the first Hollywood actors to play a homosexual character when he was cast as a gay Holocaust victim in the Broadway production, Bent.
This performance earned him his first Theatre World Award.
Richard started to appear in Hollywood films in the mid-to-late 1970s. In 1974 he was cast in The Lords of Flatbush. However, he was replaced after having a fight with his would-be co-star, Sylvester Stallone.
He went on to perform in small films such as Looking for Mr. Goodbar (1977) and Terence Malick’s Days of Heaven (1978) and was quickly building a great reputation in Hollywood.
Richard’s first film in the 1908s, American Gigolo was a big hit and helped him to establish himself as a leading man and sex symbol.
He solidified his status as a leading man by starring in other films such as An Officer and a Gentleman in 1982. In this film, he starred alongside Debra Winger.
Richard earned a Golden Globe nomination for this film for Best Actor and a Screen Actor’s Guild Award for being part of the Best Cast. The film also grossed more than $130M.
The rest of the 1980s was relatively quiet for Gere. However, in 1990 he returned with the film Internal Affairs.
In the same year, he also played the high-powered businessman Edward Lewis in Pretty Women, starring alongside Julia Roberts.
The film was extremely popular and a box office hit. It earned Richard his second Golden Globe nomination.
Richard continued to release films throughout the 90s, starring in films such as Sommersby, Primal Fear in 1996, and 1999’s Runaway Bride.
In 1999, Richard was name People magazine’s Sexiest Man Alive.
He started the 2000s by appearing in the films The Mothman Prophecies and co-starring with Diane Lane in Unfaithful.
In 2002, Richard won his first Golden Globe when he starred in the musical Chicago.
In 2004, Richard tested out his ballroom dancing skills in Shall We Dance. The film went on to gross more than $170M worldwide.
2007 saw his next big hit with the semi-biographical film I’m Not There. In this film, he was one of six actors to play a version of Bob Dylan.
In 2008, Gere once again teamed up with Diane Lane to star in romantic drama Nights in Rodanthe, which grossed $84M worldwide.
This film was Richard’s most recent to have been produced by a major film studio, largely due to Gere’s politics of China.
He has appeared in lots of independent feature films since. In 2012, he got his fourth Golden Globe nomination for indie film Arbitrage.
In 2016, he strayed away from his typical character type when he starred in Norman: The Moderate Rise and Tragic Fall of a New York Fixer.

In 2005, Richard bought a house in Sag Harbor, NY for $6.9M. The 6-acre house has 300 feet of bay frontage and very large lawns.

In 2013, he listed the property for sale at $70M. However, he lowered it to $47.5M, and then again to $36.5M when TV host Matt Lauer bought the property.
Richard’s main residence is an amazing 50+ acre compound estate in Pound Ridge, New York.
